Ancestry Library Edition (library subscription version)
...claims to be "the largest collection of family history data online." Over 900 million names can be searched in their extensive free database and premium subscription database. The La Crosse Public Library currently holds a subscription to the library version of Ancestry.com complete with access to census images for two simultaneous users. Census images include the United States, United Kingdom and Canada. Users must be in the library to use this subscription. The free databases (social security death index, etc.) can be searched using the general Ancestry.com link.

Bureau of Land Management
...offers easy access to scanned images of land patents. Searching can be preformed by patentee, legal description, accession number, serial number, etc. Currently, patents issued between 1820-1908 are included. Click on at the very bottom of the page the "search land patents" link.

Civil War-Soldiers and Sailors System
...a computerized database containing basic facts about servicemen who served on both sides of the Civil War. Other information includes regimental history, and over time more information will be added.

...claims to be the "Internet's oldest and largest genealogy site." This site is a gateway to other parts of the RootsWeb project, has a large list of search engines and databases, and up-to-date information on all areas of genealogical interest.

Great Lakes Maritime History
...includes 1,012 images of Great Lakes ships, lighthouses, and other maritime related items. The site is a collaborative project between the following participating institutions: Division for Libraries, Technology and Community Learning (DLTCL), University of Wisconsin campuses at Madison, La Crosse and Superior, Milwaukee Public Library, Wisconsin State Historical Society, and the Door County Maritime Museum. The project was supported with Library Services and Technology Act funding.
